July 1, 2012 — During the movie “Seeking a friend for the end of the world” Steve Carell’s character watches a highlight from a contest simply known as “The Big Game” while Kiera Knightley’s character naps in his lap. I think I can safely, without spoiling the film, relate that the two characters are in the middle of a world of chaos (the end of the world, duh), but still have things they want to accomplish. This is a beautiful use of sports metaphor because, as anyone whose ever seen this highlight from the Cal-Stanford game in 1982 can testify, it’s the embodiment of someone focusing on the pursuit of the goal despite the chaos around him. I’m sure the crushing of the trombone player is metaphorically significant too, but I’ll leave that commentary up to you, dear reader.
